Sanitize PDF

Remove scripts, risky actions, attached files and metadata from a PDF before you share or open it. Free, on your device.

Sanitize PDF takes out the parts of a PDF that can run code, open other programs, send data or hide information. It first lists what it finds: scripts, actions that launch files or submit data, embedded media, XFA form data, attached files, links to websites, comments and document properties. Scripts, risky actions and media are always removed; choose whether to also remove attachments, links, comments and metadata. The pages’ text and pictures aren’t changed.

Questions

Is a sanitized PDF safe to open?

It no longer has scripts, launch actions or embedded media, which removes common ways PDFs misbehave. It isn’t a virus scan: keep your PDF reader up to date too.

Will a fillable form still work?

Regular form fields stay and can be filled in, but scripts that calculated or checked answers are removed. A form made only in XFA may show a blank page.

Why remove links and metadata?

Links can lead to unwanted websites, and document properties can reveal names, software and dates you didn’t mean to share.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. It’s processed on your device and never leaves it.
