Compress Image

Make an image file smaller by choosing a format and quality, and see the new size before you download.

Compress Image reduces the file size of a photo so it loads faster on a website or fits an email or upload limit. It saves the image again in its own format by default, or as WebP, AVIF, JPG or PNG, at the quality you choose, and shows the estimated new size and the percentage saved as you move the slider. A Target File Size mode sets the quality for you when you need to stay under a limit such as 100 KB.

How to use Compress Image

  1. 1

    Add an image

Drop, choose or paste a JPG, PNG, WebP or iPhone HEIC image.

  2. 2

    Choose the output format

Your file's own format is selected by default. WebP is usually smaller. AVIF usually makes the smallest files but takes longer to encode, JPG opens everywhere, and PNG is lossless, so it saves the least space.

  3. 3

Set the quality or a target size

Move the quality slider and watch the size estimate, or switch to Target File Size and type a size in KB or click 50, 100, 200 or 500 KB.

  4. 4

    Check and download

Look at the preview and the percentage saved, then click Download.

What it does

Live size estimate
The new file size and the percentage saved update as you change settings, and you are warned when the result would be larger than the original.
AVIF, WebP, JPG and PNG
Four output formats, including AVIF, which is encoded directly in your browser with a WebAssembly encoder.
Target file size mode
Type a size in KB and the tool chooses a quality setting for it. It is an estimate, so check the live size before you download.
Dimensions stay the same
Compression keeps the width and height. To make a file much smaller, resize it first and then compress it.

Questions

How much smaller will my image get?

It depends on the image. Large camera photos often shrink a lot as WebP or AVIF at 70% to 85% quality, while small graphics or files that are already compressed may shrink very little. The live estimate shows the result before you download.

Which format makes the smallest file: AVIF, WebP or JPG?

AVIF is usually the smallest at similar visual quality, followed by WebP and then JPG. AVIF takes longer to encode in the browser, especially for large photos, and some older programs cannot open it.

How do I compress an image to 100 KB?

Choose Target File Size and click 100 KB. If the live size is still above 100 KB, lower the quality a little more, or reduce the dimensions with Resize Image first.

Will compression make my photo look worse?

WebP, AVIF and JPG remove detail that is hard to see. At 75% to 90% quality most photos look the same at normal viewing size, while very low settings cause blur and blocky areas.

Why is the compressed file bigger than the original?

This happens when the original was already well optimized, or when a photo is saved as PNG. Try WebP or AVIF, or a lower quality setting.

Is EXIF data removed when I compress a photo?

Yes. The new file is built from the image pixels, so camera information and GPS location are not included.
