PNG to WebP

Convert PNG images to WebP and keep transparent backgrounds, usually with a much smaller file.

PNG to WebP converts PNG files such as screenshots, logos and graphics to the WebP format. WebP supports transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent after conversion. The result is usually much smaller than the PNG, and a quality slider lets you keep text and thin lines sharp.

How to use PNG to WebP

  1. 1

    Open a PNG

Drop a PNG file on the upload box, click to choose one, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V.

  2. 2

    Set the quality

Use 90% or more for logos, text and screenshots; 75% to 85% is usually enough for photos.

  3. 3

    Download the WebP

Click Download WebP. Transparent areas remain transparent in the new file.

What it does

Transparency kept
The alpha channel of your PNG is stored in the WebP, so logos and icons keep their see-through background.
Much smaller files
WebP compression usually reduces PNG screenshots and graphics to a fraction of their size.
Quality control
Set the quality from 10% to 100% depending on how much detail the image needs.
Same dimensions
The WebP keeps the exact width and height of the PNG.

Questions

Does PNG to WebP keep the transparent background?

Yes. WebP supports transparency, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels are kept.

Why is the WebP so much smaller than the PNG?

PNG is lossless and stores every pixel exactly. WebP here uses lossy compression, which removes detail that is hard to see and saves a lot of space.

What quality should I use for logos and screenshots?

Use 90% to 100% so that text, icons and thin lines stay sharp. For photos, 75% to 85% is usually enough.

Can I use WebP images on my website?

Yes. All current major browsers display WebP. If you also support very old browsers or apps, keep the original PNG as a fallback.
